2022 Top 50 Global Freight Companies

Recently, Transport Topics, in conjunction with SJ Consulting Group, announced the 2022 Top 50 ranking of global freight forwarders.


The list is based on the revenue of freight business in 2021 and covers a wide range of transportation modes such as sea, air, rail and truck.


Unlike before, the list includes not only asset-heavy companies with their own means of transportation, but also third-party logistics companies that arrange and coordinate transportation for shippers and carriers, so for the first time, a number of well-known international freight forwarding companies and global logistics providers are on the list.


Overall, the list includes 13 shipping companies, 10 rail freight companies, 10 third-party logistics companies, eight parcel delivery companies, seven trucking companies and two airlines.

The top 10 on the list are: UPS, FedEx, Deutsche Post DHL, US Postal Service, Maersk, CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, Kuehne+Nagel, Deutsche Bahn, and Mediterranean Shipping.


According to the list, there are four international liner companies in the top ten. Maersk 2021 freight business revenue of $60.439 billion, ranked fifth; CMA CGM's freight business revenue of $56.193 billion, ranked sixth; COSCO Shipping's freight business revenue of $51.722 billion, ranked seventh; Mediterranean Shipping's freight business revenue of $32.399 billion, ranked tenth.


Swiss-based ocean and air freight forwarder Kuehne+Nagel International made its debut on the list, ranking eighth and the largest global third-party logistics company on the list. Another logistics company, Denmark's DSV, ranked 13th.


C.H. Robinson, the largest third-party logistics forwarder in North America, is ranked 17th; Seattle-based forwarder Expeditors International is ranked 22nd.


Also new to the list this year are Sinotrans, a Chinese logistics company, at No. 19, and French Railways, at No. 25. Other newcomers to the list include China's Kerry Logistics, in 35th place.

Overall, the top 50 in the list includes companies in all major freight modes. There are 2 commercial airlines, 7 trucking companies, 8 major parcel delivery services, 10 rail freight service providers, 10 third party logistics companies, and 13 ocean shipping companies. Japan has six, and France and Germany both have four companies in the Top 50.
